"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is the second song on and first single from Gordon Lightfoot's Summertime Dream album and the song he is most proud of writing (according to Bill DeYoung). Although I personally do not consider it his best, the song is generally included in lists of the best Canadian songs: 4th in Chart magazine's 2000 poll, 5th in Chart magazine's 2005 poll, 15th in Bob Mersereau's 2010 The Top 100 Canadian Singles, 23rd in Chart magazine's 1996 poll, 29th in CBC Radio's 2014 list, 44th in the 2011 Mar*Star poll and 54th in the 1992 Mar*Star poll.
I was a teenager in the Sault on 10 November 1975 when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald – the largest ship ever to sink in the Great Lakes – sank in a storm just shy of Whitefish Bay. I can still remember hearing the radio reports about its demise.
