Lightfoot! was the debut album of Gordon Lightfoot, though he had released some previous singles in Canada ("(Remember Me) I'm the One" reached #3 on the CHUM charts in 1962 and "Negotiations"/"It's Too Late, He Wins" reached #27 in 1963) and had had several of his songs recorded by other artists (including "For Lovin' Me" and "Early Morning Rain" by both Ian & Sylvia and Peter, Paul & Mary, "Steel Rail Blues" by George Hamilton IV, and "Ribbon of Darkness" by Marty Robbins).
Three tracks from Lightfoot!, which Rolling Stone Record Guide gave 3 stars and AllMusic gives 4.5 stars, were released as singles: "I'm Not Sayin'," which reached #12 on the RPM top singles chart and #2 on the RPM country singles chart, "Ribbon of Darkness," whose b-side – the non-album Dylan cover "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" – hit #3 on the singles chart and #9 on the adult contemporary chart, and "For Lovin' Me," released as the flip side of the non-album "Spin, Spin," which climbed to #7 on the singles chart. Lightfoot! ranked 91st in Bob Mersereau's 2007 book, The Top 100 Canadian Albums, and 93rd in CBC Radio's 2013 list of the 100 Greatest Canadian Albums Ever.
One year (in the late 1990s, I think), we took Rick and Sande to see Gordon Lightfoot at one of his week-long Massey Hall engagements. Although Lightfoot was already old then, he still did a remarkable job covering all of his classics.
