"The Ryans and The Pittmans" is a traditional Newfoundland folk song that you might remember from your elementary school music class. In the hands of Great Big Sea, as "Rant & Roar," it is a rousing rock 'n' Celtic singalong, whose chorus became somewhat of a theme song during our annual visits to the island: "we'll rant and we'll roar like true Newfoundlanders."
"Rant & Roar" is the final track on Great Big Sea's breakthrough second album, Up, and was released as one of the "flip side" tracks on the band's debut single, a cover of Slade's "Run Runaway." Although the single did not crack the charts, it helped to garner the band nationwide exposure.
