Tonight's the Night is the sixth solo album by Neil Young. Although released in 1975, most of the songs were recorded in 1973, after the overdose deaths of his guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry (although "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" is from a 1970 concert with Crazy Horse, including Whitten, and "Lookout Joe" is from the 1972 Harvest sessions).
Tonight's the Night was not an overwhelming commercial success (it peaked at #12 in Canada, #25 in the US and #48 in the UK); however, it is one of the most critically acclaimed albums ever, embraced by both the mainstream (30th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Albums; 55th in CBC Radio's Greatest Canadian Albums Ever, 330th in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time) and alternative press (14th in Spin's Top 100 Alternative Albums):
Tracy is probably the bigger Neil Young fan in our union, but she's not a big fan of this album, while it is, more often than not, my go-to Neil Young record.
