"Lovers in a Dangerous Time" was the first single released from Bruce Cockburn's Stealing Fire, an album whose lyrics were largely inspired by a visit to Central America. In that context, this song seems to be about romance in a war-torn country, where the fear of American bombs is omnipresent (though Cockburn has made counter claims about the song's derivation and meaning).
Although "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" didn't rate in either of the two May*Star polls, it does in virtually every other poll about great Canadian songs: 32nd in Chart magazine's 2005 poll, 11th in CBC's 50 Tacks: The Canadian Edition, 59th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Singles, 18th in Huffington Post's 100 Best Canadian Songs Ever, and 15th in CBC's 100 Best Canadian Songs Ever.
U2 mentions the song in "God Part II," singing "Heard a singer on the radio late last night/He says he's gonna kick the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight." The Barenaked Ladies covered the song for Kick at the Darkness, a Cockburn tribute album that borrows its title from that same lyric, and the single, accompanied by a video, was their first top 40 hit.
