Outskirts is the debut album from Blue Rodeo. Released in 1987, it drew comparisons with The Band and Gram Parsons, setting a high bar of expectations that Blue Rodeo has generally managed to fulfil. The album reached #20 on the RPM Albums Chart and was certified quadruple platinum for sales over 400,000.
International music critics took note, though gave Outskirts only mildly supportive reviews, with both AllMusic and Rolling Stone magazine giving it 3 stars out of 5. AllMusic notes that the "tasteful use of organ" and "sheer quality of the material" distinguished Blue Rodeo from the "hordes of other Gram Parsons devotees" and Rolling Stone that "the best new American band of the year may well be Canadian."
In Canada, Outskirts frequently appears on lists of the best Canadian albums of all time:
Four singles were released from Outskirts, all of them becoming hits in Canada: "Outskirts" (#35 Country Tracks), "Try" (#6 Top Singles), "Rose-Coloured Glasses" (#40 Top Singles) and "Rebel" (#33 Country Tracks).
