Stan Rogers – Barrett's Privateers

"Barrett's Privateers" is a track from Stan Rogers's debut album, Fogarty's Cove. It tells the story of a young fisherman who signs on with a privateer in 1778 to "cruise the seas for American gold."

The song is a rousing sing-along that can be heard in most any pub on any given evening on George Street in St. John's (and probably any other pub in the Atlantic provinces). It has been covered by many artists, from the Australian party band Wedding's Parties Anything to Scottish metal band Alestorm, and inspired a parody, "Garnet's Homemade Beer," from Ian Robb of the Friends of Fiddler's Green.

"Barrett's Privateers" ranked 27th in the 2011 Mar*Star great Canadian song poll and 37th in the 2013 CBC list.
