"Northwest Passage" is one of Stan Rogers's most famous songs. It was used in the final episode of Due South, ranked fourth in CBC's 50 Tracks: The Canadian Edition and was included on Obama's playlist, placed 33rd in Huffington Post's list of greatest Canadian songs and 38th in the 2011 Mar*Star list, provided the text for a Governor General's Award-winning children's book (Northwest Passage) illustrated by Matt James, has been quoted by prime ministers and governors general, and, I seem to remember, was called the best Canadian song of all time by Peter GzowskiGzowski introduced a list of his top Canadian songs shortly after I had invited him to participate in the original Mar*Star poll..
Rogers sings it a cappella on his album of the same name, with his brother Garnet and a couple others joining him on the chorus. Like other songs on the album, "Northwest Passage" was inspired by travelling in the West and North of Canada, so, not surprisingly,Tracy and I listened to it several times during our trip from Calgary to Dawson City in the summer of 2016.
