Guess Who – Wheatfield Soul

Wheatfield Soul is the first Guess Who album to feature Burton Cummings on lead vocals and the first to reach the US charts, peaking at #45. Its single, "These Eyes," was their first song to reach the top 10 in the US and its "white soul" sound probably also gives the album its title. It ranked 55th in Bob Mersereau's 2007 book, The Top 100 Canadian Albums.

The album received a tepid response from the critics, perhaps because not only do they mimic blue-eyed soul on that single, they also mimic the Beatles, the Doors, Paul McCartney, Gordon Lightfoot, and so on:

I seem to have always known about this album, perhaps introduced to it by my older brothers shortly after it was released. Much of what I liked about Wheatfield Soul back then – such as the Jim Morrison mannerisms of "Friends of Mine" – haven't aged well, but I still enjoy the tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.
