Fogarty's Cove was the debut album from Stan Rogers, the famous folk musician and songwriter, who died in a fire aboard Air Canada flight 797 at the Cincinnati airport in 1983. It includes eleven Rogers' compositions that "plumb the history and character of Maritimes fishing and mining villages" (both his parents came from Nova Scotia, which is where he spent many of his summers) and one traditional Newfoundland song.
Fogarty's Cove has been well received by critics, earning 4.5 stars from AllMusic, ranking 54th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Albums and 31st in CBC Radio's 2013 list of the 100 Greatest Canadian Albums, and garnering a perfect four stars in Northern Journey: A Guide to Canadian Folk Music on CD.
While Rogers didn't release any singles from Fogarty's Cove, the album does include several of his most popular songs, including "Barrett's Privateers," "Make and Break Harbour," "Fogarty's Cove" and "Forty-Five Years."
