"Gens du pays," written by Gilles Vigneault, apparently on a dare, to replace "Happy Birthday," was first performed at the Fête Nationale du Québec (Saint John the Baptist Day) celebrations in Montreal on 24 June 1975. It became closely linked with the Parti Québécois and the sovereignty movement.
