"The Canadian Dream" originally appeared on Sam Roberts's Brother Down EP, but was re-recorded for – and met a much wider audience on – We Were Born in a Flame. In the song, Roberts sings about the Canadian dream, but says that it is "as far away as it's ever been," before literally spelling out the answer in the chorus: S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M.
Since Roberts's kids go to the same school as my sister Charlotte's kids (and we saw him opening for The Hip at Bobcaygeon), I guess we can expect some of his stuff on the list – so I'm glad it is something this Canadian.

The song is completely Canadian – from references to the Canadian dream and the cold weather to the s-o-c-i-a-l-i-s-m chorus, which he says often doesn't go over well in the US. |
