Parachute Club – Rise Up

"Rise Up" is the opening track on the Parachute Club's Daniel Lanois-produced debut album, The Parachute Club. It was released as a single in the summer of 1983, first appearing on the RPM charts on July 30th, before rising to #9. In 1984, "Rise Up" won the Juno Award for Single of the Year and was nominated for Video of the Year, while The Parachute Club was named the Most Promising Group. "Rise Up" ranked 44th in CBC Radio's 50 Tracks: The Canadian Edition, 48th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Singles, and 83rd in Huntington Post's greatest Canadian songs list.

The reggae-influenced beat and feel good lyrics, which call for celebration, freedom, peace and sharing power, have made "Rise Up" a popular anthem for various causes, most notably gay rights (it was first performed live at the 1983 Pride Parade in Toronto and was re-released in a dance remix for World Pride in 2014). It was also sung at the funeral for former NDP leader Jack Layton.
