Stampeders – Sweet City Woman

"Sweet City Woman" was the third single released from the Stampeders' debut album, Against the Grain. The song helped the band win three awards at the 1972 Juno Awards, Composer of the Year, Best Produced Single and Group of the Year. It ranked 28th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Singles , 42nd in Chart magazine's 1996 poll, 50th in the 1992 Mar*Star poll, and 94th in CBC's Best Canadian Songs Ever.

With its distinctive opening banjo riff, "Sweet City Woman" climbed to the top of the Singles and Country charts in Canada and reached #8 in the US. Although the Stampeders had other hit singles in Canada, including "Carry Me" from the same album, the only other time they reached the US top 40 was with a novelty number with Wolfman Jack.
