"Stand Tall" was the first single released from Burton Cummings's debut solo album, after his long career with the Guess Who. Ostensibly written after his girlfriend of twelve years left him for another man, this rock ballad charted all over the world and sold over five million copies.
At the 1977 Juno Awards, "Stand Tall" was nominated for song of the year, and Cummings won two awards, prompting him to comment, "Don't let anyone tell you that things don't happen fast in Canada. In just 75 minutes, I went from Best New Male Vocalist to Male Vocalist of the Year."
Although it is easy to make fun of the over-emoting on this (and other rock ballads), I do remember it fondly from my early teenage years (and Tracy and I can't help singing along with it whenever it comes on).
