After the discount record company forced the K-Tels to change their name, they released a four-song EP as the Young Canadians with "Hawaii" as the title cut. It is, arguably, the best punk song to come out of Vancouver's glorious first wave, which included the likes of DOA, Subhumans, Pointed Sticks, Dishrags and Modernettes. "Hawaii" placed 21st in Chart magazine's 1996 poll of top Canadian singles.
Punk rock reached Sault Ste. Marie from Britain during the winter of 1977-78 and I was quickly a fan, but I really didn't discover Canadian punk music until much later: one of my favourite finds was Art Bergmann's early music. I've been able to find vinyl copies of the Young Canadians' This Is Your Life EP, Poisoned's eponymous EP, and Los Popularos' Born Free EP, but sadly I have not found Hawaii – my only version of this song is from the No Escape compilation CD.
