Daniel Lanois was already a well regarded record producer when he released his debut album as an artist, Acadie, in 1989. "The Maker," the second track on the album, was one of several songs released as a single and ranked 28th in CBC's Best Canadian Songs Ever list, 95th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Singles, and 121st in Mar*Star's Canada 125 poll.
Daniel Lanois says that he took the unreleased drum track from a Neville Brothers song and superimposed his unfinished song to create "The Maker," so it is probably fitting that Aaron, Art and Cyril contribute to it.
