"I'm an Adult Now" was originally an independent release and, thanks to a low-budget video that received heavy play on Much Music and was nominated for Best Video at the 1987 Juno Awards, became a smash Canadian hit and led the band to sign with Chrysalis.
Todd Rundgren was brought in to produce the band's debut Chrysalis album, Love Junk, and re-recorded "I'm an Adult Now," which enjoyed some success on the U.S. charts and is included in most lists of great Canadian songs: the 1992 Mar*Star poll (59th), all three Chart polls (4th in 1996, 6th in 2000, 34th in 2005), Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Singles (32nd), the 2011 Mar*Star poll (36th), Huffington Post's Best Canadian Songs Ever (56th), and CBC's Best Canadian Songs Ever (99th).
The first time I remember hearing "I'm an Adult Now," I was in-and-out of the record stores on Yonge Street in Toronto, perhaps doing Boxing Day shopping with Frank Huntley. The song reminded me of Lou Reed and I bought the LP, Love Junk, on the spot.
