"Gillis Mountain," the third single released by the Rankin Family from their second album, Fare Thee Well Love, became an integral piece of our family soundtrack on our annual car trips to Keels, Newfoundland (shortly after crossing the causeway (to the accompaniment of the Grievous Angels' song), we'd listen to it), so it isn't surprising that "Gillis Mountain" made the Mar*Star list in 2011.
While Tracy and I did see Jimmy Rankin perform one summer, opening for Great Big Sea at an outdoor festival near St. John's, my better memory is sitting beside him, talking casually without letting on I knew who he was, on a different mountain – Sunshine in Banff – while he and his own family of Rankins adjusted their ski equipment.
