Oscar Peterson – Hymn to Freedom

"Hymn to Freedoom" is the final track on Oscar Peterson's splendid Night Train album. It was written in support of – and soon became an anthem for – the Civil Rights movement. The song was adopted as Peterson's perennial concert closer and inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008.

At the Waterloo Region District School Board, in the weeks leading up to the winter holiday break, we trustees usually invite schools to perform before our public meetings; this year, the junior choir from Howard Robertson Public School performed "Hymn to Freedom," which reminded me of how important this song really is and led me to discover the lyrics for the first time.
