"Sweet Jane," a cover of the Velvet Underground classic, based on the 1969 live version, was a track on the Cowboy Junkies' second independent album, The Trinity Session. The song helped earn the band a record deal with RCA, who gave the album a major label release and plugged "Sweet Jane" as the band's first single.
Lou Reed claimed that the Cowboy Junkies' version of "Sweet Jane" was his favourite (click here for an article about a dozen versions of the song). It has been used in several movie soundtracks, including Prelude to a Kiss, Natural Born Killers, Flight and The Best of Me, and placed 47th in the 1996 Chart magazine list of top Canadian singles.
The last time Tracy and I saw Cowboy Junkies, the show was being filmed for an anniversary (25th?) special or something, at an old church in downtown Toronto, but I haven't been able to track down any evidence of such a thing happening, though you can watch them on YouTube at the Orange Lounge and the 2008 Newport Folk Festival.
