"Where Evil Grows" was the second single released by The Poppy Family, from their second album, Poppy Seeds. By this time, the band consisted only of Susan and Terry Jacks. The single reached top 10 in Canada and almost cracked the top 40 in the U.S., even though it is a marked change from their previous hit, the almost bubblegum "Which Way You Goin' Billy?."
While I'm sure I heard the Poppy Family version on the radio back when I was a kid – Chris Murphy of Sloan, who picked it as #2 on his list of top 10 Canadian singles, says "it scared the hell out of me as a kid", it was the D.O.A. version, first released as a single to benefit the fight against the pollution and contamination of Howe Sound caused by the pulp mills in British Columbia and later included as a hidden track on their Murder album, that really made this song for me.
