Stompin' Tom Connors – Sudbury Saturday Night

"Sudbury Saturday Night" is one of Stompin' Tom Connors's oldest and most loved songs. He originally recorded it for his 1967 debut album, The Northlands' Own, re-recorded it in 1969 (for his popular studio album Sings Bud the Spud and Other Favourites) and 1975 (for his live album Live at the Horseshoe), and included it on several compilations (I have at least five copies of the song in my collection).

Recently, I bought a collection of Stompin' Tom albums, cassettes and CDs from Darin Parise, a banjo, dobro, fiddle et cetera player (formerly with the Dixie Flyers) who accompanied Connors from about 1999-2005. It was so much fun listening to his tales of backing Connors that I bought more stuff than I probably should have, including three different versions of My Stompin' Grounds and two 45s by Gaetan LePine, the Timmins bartender who "discovered" Stompin' Tom.

As proof of how important "Sudbury Saturday Night" is in the Stompin' Tom canon, it was played as the finale of Stompin' Tom's self-planned memorial service on 13 March 2013 in Peterborough and a statue of Stompin' Tom has been erected in downtown Sudbury.
