"Signs" was the breakthrough international single for the Five Man Electrical Band, who had previously had seven Canadian top 40 hits, mostly as The Staccatos. It was originally released as the flip side of "Hello Melinda, Goodbye" (#55 in Canada), but, after deejays showed a preference for "Signs," it was reissued as the A-side.
"Signs" ranked 38th in Bob Mersereau's The Top 100 Canadian Singles, 27th in Chart Magazine's 1996 poll and 18th in the 2011 Mar*Star poll.
In 1990, Tesla had a top 10 hit with a live version of the song.
