Hunter, Hunter is the fifth album released by Newfoundland's Amelia Curran and the one that brought her national exposure. The CBC says the album "solidified Amelia’s reputation as an heir to Leonard Cohen’s songwriting throne" and the National Post likened it to "Leonard Cohen being channeled in a dusty saloon by Patsy Cline."
In 2010, Hunter, Hunter won the Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Album of the Year, over the likes of Bahamas and Corb Lund, was long-listed for the Polaris Prize, and was nominated for three East Coast Music Awards: Folk Recording, Female Recording and FACTOR Recording. AllMusic gives it 4 stars out of 5.
As with most Newfoundland music, I bought this at Fred's Record Store on Duckworth Street in St. John's during one of our summer visits to the island. I was particularly captivated by "The Mistress" and "The Dozens," both of which also received airplay on the CBC, if memory serves me well. Later, we saw Curran open for the Rheostatics at their comeback show at Massey Hall.
