In late 1989, after earning a record deal with his performance at the New Music Seminar in New York City, Maestro Fresh-Wes released his debut album, Symphony in Effect.
Symphony in Effect sold almost 200,000 copies in Canada, reached #4 on the Canadian Album Charts, won the 1991 Juno for Rap Recording of the Year, and placed 33rd in CBC Radio's 2013 list of the 100 Greatest Canadian Albums, but it didn't fare as well with the critics:
Two singles were released from the album in 1990, "Let Your Backbone Slide," which hit #10 in Canada and #14 in the US, and "Drop the Needle."
