Bim – Thistles

Thistles is the third album released by Dawson Creek-born, singer-songwriter Bim. It includes re-workings of several of his earlier songs ("Tender Lullaby," "Right After My Heart" and "Waitin' for You Mama"), as well as some stellar new compositions, such as "Night on a Hill," "Broke Down" and the title track. Although Thistles received little critical notice (AllMusic gives it 3 stars out of 5), Bim continued to build a reputation, through live performances, for his high nasally voice and percussive guitar playing.

When I attended the first ever Edmonton Folk Festival, in the summer of 1980 (an aside: my friend Norm Kallio and I were in the crowd photo on the front page of the Edmonton Sun), I was introduced to a bunch of musicians I had never heard of before, including Roy Forbes (then known as Bim). (Interestingly, I just looked through the 1980 lineup and Bim didn't play the festival; perhaps it was just hearing artists like Pied Pear, Stan Rogers, Figgy Duff and Valdy that drove me to seek out records by artists such as Bim at the Wee Book Inn on Whyte Avenue or maybe he was accompanying Shari Ulrich or I saw him somewhere else during my 9-month sojourn in Alberta's capital.)
