Big Blue Sky, the major label debut by Saskatchewan's Northern Pikes, was one of those touchstone releases for Canadians of a certain age: while the lyrics are not explicitly Canadian, songs like "You Sold the Farm" and "Big Blue Sky" are clearly written from their prairie experience rather than a generic America, as many of their predecessors had done.
The album peaked at #25 on The Record album chart and at #26 on the RPM album chart. Three tracks were released as singles, including "Teenland" (#29), "Things I Do for Money" (#87) and "Dancing in a Dance Club." AllMusic rates it 3 stars out of 5.
I remember seeing Northern Pikes at an NDP National Convention in Regina, as a last minute replacement for the Waltons, who were stuck in the US – or maybe it was the other way around.
