Steppenwolf – Steppenwolf Live

Steppenwolf Live, "recorded live at various concerts during early 1970," was the band's sixth release in just over two years. Despite that market saturation, the album achieved Steppenwolf's highest ranking in the UK (#15) and also cracked the top 10 (#7) in the US.

While Steppenwolf's first two albums were seminal heavy metal documents – "Born to Be Wild" from the first album (and included here in a live rendition) providing "heavy metal" to the rock 'n' roll lexicon, and their fifth album, Monster, whose material is the basis for these live shows, was generally well received, this double album did not meet with much favour: AllMusic and the Rolling Stone Album guide both give Steppenwolf Live only 2 out of 5 stars, and Robert Christgau didn't even bother to review it.

According to Billboard magazine, the single version of "Monster," which peaked at #39 on the US charts, is taken from this album.
