Landscapes, Valdy's second album, had been kicking around our house for as long as I can remember – one of my older siblings buying it when it first came out in 1973. Several of the lyrics appealed to me and I still find myself singing "a cup of coffee in the morning keeps me running fine 'til noon" from time to time.
Perhaps the second concert I ever attended, as a teenager growing up in Sault Ste. Marie, was a Valdy show at a theatre (on James Street, I think). I went with a bunch of my high school football / hockey buddies and we could probably have been the inspiration for his "Rock & Roll Song," except that he had recorded it half a decade earlier. Tracy and I have seen Valdy play a few times since – at a Canada Day concert in Ottawa, at folk festivals here and there, and, most recently, at last summer's Kitchener Blues Festival.
Landscapes scraped into the top 40 on the Canadian album charts. "Simple Life" and "Landscapes" were both released as singles; the former reached as high as #16 on the singles chart and #22 on adult contemporary, while the latter squeaked into the top 100 on the AC chart.
