Shania Twain – The Woman in Me
Shania Twain's second major-label album, The Woman in Me, topped the country charts in Canada and the United States, while also crossing into the top 10 on the pop charts (#6 in Canada, #5 US, #7 UK). It was the largest selling album by a female performer, selling more than 20 million copies, until Twain came along and topped that with her next release.
The Woman in Me garnered Twain seven nominations at the 1996 Juno Awards, winning for Best Female Country Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year, while also winning the Best Country Album Grammy award. Country Music Television named it the 8th greatest country music album of all-time, the only album by a female or Canadian performer in their top 10.
Although AllMusic gave it 4.5 stars out of 5, many other critics were less enthusiastic:
- Robert Christgau gave it a C in The Village Voice and a one-star honourable mention in his consumer guide, comparing her less than favourably to Anne Murray
- Entertainment Tonight graded it an F, calling The Woman in Me "one of the worst records of the decade"
The Woman in Me spawned eight top 10 country singles, six of which reached #1 in Canada: "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?," "Any Man of Mine," "The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)," "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here," "You Win My Love" and "No One Needs to Know."
