Daniel Lanois – Acadie
Acadie is the first album from Daniel Lanois as a performer. Lanois had already made his name as a producer for Canadian artists (e.g., Martha and the Muffins, Raffi, Parachute Club) and the likes of U2 and Peter Gabriel, and he interrupted his work on Acadie to produce albums for Bob Dylan and the Neville Brothers.
The album, which includes singing in both official languages, peaked at #36 on the RPM chart in Canada and #166 on the Billboard chart in the US, and has made many best Canadian album lists:
- #30 in and #23 in
- #29 in and #15 in 2000 Chart poll
- #20 in Bob Mersereau's 2007 book
- #43 in
Lanois won the 1990 Juno Award as Most Promising Male Vocalist and was nominated as Best Producer for his work on Acadie, which also received solid critical reviews:
- AllMusic (4 stars out of 5) called it "a stunning debut album" that "is priceless, and stands up well to repeated listening."
- Robert Christgau graded it a B-
- Rolling Stone Album Guide (4 stars out of 5) called it "sonically gorgeous – warm, immediate, bell-like" and "fascinating in its mix of high technology and rootsy integrity."
"The Maker," which was released as a single, as were "Jolie Louise" and "Still Water," is included on this list of Great Canadian Songs.
